Unless you've been hibernating or living on another planet for the past year, you would know that the world economic situation is in a pretty mess up state...to say the least. Don't know about you but I'm rather tired of it all - reading, hearing, watching and more bad news as each day unfolds. So, while we're heading right into this inescapable mess, maybe it would be good for us to try and look on the bright side of things (I can already hear some people say, "What bright side?!").
Yup...no doubt things are gloomy but here are some possible bright spots that we can bask in. Take for eg: those who have had their salaries cut, like some friends of mine who saw their monthly paychecks shrink recently. But, as a result of the unfortunate "snip", they also saw their free time growing. In line with the pay cuts, many were asked to work shorter weeks or fewer hours. As a result, they finally have the opportunity to do things they have always wanted to do but never really had the time to do.
"Now I can finally start cooking for my family and try out new recipes", says a friend who is now working a flexible 4day week after receiving a 20% pay cut. Another friend, a former investment banker who is currently out of job and looking for one, has taken the opportunity to exercise and lose weight while job hunting. "Aiyah...what to do? Things are quite out of our hands, really...but what we can do, we do lah. And in this case, I can better improve 'my look', why not?" he quips. Mr X-Investment Banker has already lost 8kg and worked himself down from trouser-size 36 to 32.
Meanwhile, for the bargain hunters, now is a time as good as any to start shopping for deals! Be it for investment or just some good old retail therapy, there are offers everywhere to satisfy any shopper. There are also those who dived right into the hot offers outside investment market. Just recently, a friend managed to purchase two return tickets to Bali for a total price of RM180 nett! Another friend bought a return ticket to Melbourne for RM400 nett. Never before could one get a return airline ticket to that Australian city for that price!
So gloomy as things may be for us now...perhaps there is still some hope out there and possibly some truth behind the cliche that there is a silver lining in every dark cloud.
